The Newton South Math Team participates in numerous math competitions throughout the year. Here are some of the competitions that we have participated in in the past:
The Greater Boston Math League (GBML) is a local mathematics competition administered on Wednesdays once a month from October to February (5 meets total). Newton South Math Team sends 2-3 teams of 5 students to each meet.
The Massachusetts State Championship Math Meet (MAML State) is a state-level mathematics competition in April. Teams must qualify for MAML through GBML.
The New England Association of Mathematics League (NEAML) is a mathematics competition held in May. It consists of six individual rounds, ending with a final team round. Teams must qualify for NEAML through GBML and MAML.
The American Mathematics Competitions (AMCs) are national mathematics competitions divided into AMC 10 (10th grade and below) and AMC 12 (12th grade and below). High scorers are invited to participate in the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME). High scorers of AMC and AIME are invited to participate in the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) and United States of America Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USAJMO).
The Harvard-MIT Math Tournament (HMMT) is an international math competition organized by Harvard and MIT undergraduates, separated into HMMT November and HMMT February. HMMT February is typically harder than HMMT November, and includes proofs.
The Duke Math Meet (DMM) is a regional math competition held in October, organized by the Duke University Mathematics Union.
The Massachusetts Association of Mathematics Leagues (MAML olympiad) is a state-wide high school individual math competition. Participants who do well in Level 1 of the competition advance to Level 2.
The Purple Comet! Math Meet is an annual, international, online, team mathematics competition designed for middle and high school students. In the competition, high school teams are given 90 minutes to work on 30 mathematics problems.
The American Regions Mathematics League (ARML): ARML Local is a national math competition administered locally, and ARML National is the final national competition hosted in four of the participating colleges. ARML contains an individual round, team round, power round, and relay round.
The MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge (M3C) is an international math modeling contest for high school juniors and seniors.
